accelerators

A substance used in small proportions which hastens a reaction, usually by acting in conjunction with a catalyst or a curing agent.

accent bullets

Directionals lighting, down lighting for walls, tree, ceiling mounts etc.

acrylic

A thermoplastic with good weather resistance, shatter resistance, and optical clarity, used for glazing.

aerated concrete

A light-weight product consisting of portland cement, cement-silica, cement-pozzolan, lime-pozzolan, or lime-silica pastes, or pastes containing blends of these ingredients & having a homogeneous cell structure, produced by gas-forming chemicals or foaming agents.

aluminium extruded

The process of extruding aluminum has been compared to squeezing toothpaste from a tube, with the metal (initially in the form of extrusion billet) taking the shape of the die through which it has been pressed. Used to make windows, doors, and gates etc.

aluminium foam-filled

Foam is inside aluminuim slate offering insulation & sound deadening.

amend

To change or modify for the better, improve.

amenity

Any feature that provides comfort, convenience, or pleasure.

anodised

Coated with a protective oxide layer by electrolysis.

appliance panels

A metal housing containing two or more devices (such as fuses) for protection against excessive current in circuits which supply portable electric appliances with current.

arbor

A leafy, shady recess formed by tree branches, shrubs, etc.

architectural designer

Is an architect that is primarily involved in the design of buildings or urban landscapes, as opposed to the construction documents & management required to construct it.

architrave

A main beam resting across the tops of columns or the frame around a doorway or window.

argon

An inert, nontoxic gas used in insulating glass units to reduce heat transfer.

armoire

A tall cabinet, usually with drawers, shelves, and doors, used for storing clothes or household items.

asphalt

A dark tar-like substance used in waterproofing buildings.

A sheet of canvas stretched on a frame & used to shelter a shop window or doorway.

baluster

Set of posts supporting a rail.

baluster

Any of various symmetrical supports, as furniture legs or spindles.

balustrade

A railing with supporting balusters.

baseboard style

Flat, low profile.

bay

A window area that projects outwards from a wall.

belt drive

The lowest-cost means for transmitting power between shafts that are not necessarily parallel. Belts run smoothly & quietly, & they cushion motor & bearings against load fluctuations.

berber carpeting

It refers to the little specs of another color or colors, called berber fleck. Berber can be either, cut pile, or loop pile construction.

berm

A narrow ledge or shelf, as along the top or bottom of a slope.

beveled glass

Is usually made by taking one-quarter inch-thick clear glass & creating a one-inch bevel on one side around the entire periphery.

bi fold door

A door unit that has 2 to 4 sections, folding in pairs.

bidet

A low oval basin used for washing one’s genital & anal area.

bituminous roll roofing

Area of roofs formed of surfaced, prepared bituminous sheets.

blank stock

Blank paper used under wallpaper. Lining paper is a traditional product used under fine wallcoverings to absorb excess moisture from the finish wallpaper. It allows seams to dry sooner and safer, & the promotes short term stability of the installation. Benefits of use include: a. Provides a smoother surface for final wallcovering. b. It is very porous and serves as an excellent base for decorative wallpaper application. c. It sets (bonds) the seams and controls the expansion/contraction process (moisture and vapor bubble reduction).

bleeding roof

Bleeding of asphalt, dirt, soot, or organic debris. Causes of black, brown, or gray stains appearing on asphalt roof shingles.

block & tackle

An apparatus of pulley blocks & ropes or cables used for hauling & hoisting heavy objects.

blown in

Fiber insulation in loose form & used to insulate attics & existing walls where framing members are not exposed.

bollard lights

Outdoor lighting usually made from aluminium or steel.

boom truck

Chassis with a body having outside-accessible compartments & a hydraulic boom with a bucket for lifting workers & tools.

Built-in

Serving as part of a whole, as a nondetachable part of a larger unit.

bullnosed stone

Rounded-edge tile.

by-pass doors

A door unit that has 2 or more sections, the doors can slide from each direction on an overhead track, sliding past each other, most commonly used in closets.

byzantine

Roman empire style.

cantilever

A bracket or beam projecting from a wall to support a balcony, cornice, etc.

carbonated (chem-dry) cleaning

Carpeting, upholstery, drapery & other textile fibers are cleaned by applying to the fibers, from a pressurized container, an aqueous effervescing internally carbonated non-detergent cleaning composition.

carpet runner

A long norrow piece of carpet.

casement

A window set on a vertical hinge so that it opens like a door.

castle tower

Shaped like the top of a castle tower.

cathedral ceiling

A high, open, usually slanting or pointed ceiling.

ceiling medallion

A ceiling ornament, usually cast in plaster; often a luminaire or chandelier is hung from its center.

ceramic

Made of clay that is permanently hardened by heat.

Ceramic Tiles

Tiles Made with Clay and permanently hardened by heat

chain drive

A flexible device for power transmission, hoisting, or conveying, consisting of an endless chain whose links mesh with toothed wheels fastened to the driving & driven shafts.

chalking

Defect of coated metals in which a layer of powder forms between the coating & the base metal.

chandelier

A large hanging light with branches for several light bulbs or candles.

channel mount

Mounting device such as an arm, or other structure for suspending the mirror.

chimney cap spark arrestors

Helps contain sparks.

chimney chase

Is a decorative surrounding that covers the metal flue inside the chimney.

circuit breakers

An automatic switch that stops the flow of electric current in a suddenly overloaded or otherwise abnormally stressed electric circuit.

cistern

A water storage tank, especially as part of a flushing toilet.

cladding

A protective or insulating layer fixed to the outside of a building or another structure.

closed riser

Vertical surfaces between treads are closed.

cobblestone

Small round stones.

composite

Made up of various parts or elements.

concrete block foundation

A structure that transfers loads, made from concrete.

concrete pier foundation

A column of concrete used to support other structural members.

conservatory

A room with a glass roof and walls, attached to a house & used as a sun lounge or a greenhouse.

console

1. A panel or unit accommodating a set of controls. 2. (also games console) a small machine for playing computerized video games.

control joints

A groove which is formed, sawed, or tooled in a concrete or masonry structure to regulate the location & amount of cracking and separation resulting from the dimensional change of different parts of the structure, thereby avoiding the development of high stresses.

cooktop cutouts

Hole cut out to place the cooktop or countertop stove.

copper foil glass

Type of construction where a thin adhesive backed strip of copper is applied to the edge of a piece of glass. This strip is then soldered to each succeeding piece to form a stained glass object.

core aeration

Is the process of mechanically removing plugs of thatch & soil from the lawn.

cork faced wallpaper

The wallpaper has a surface of cork. They make for a cozy, dark &woodsy effect.

cornice, cornices

1. an ornamental moulding round the wall of a room just below the ceiling. 2. a horizontal moulded projection crowning a building or structure.

crawl space

A shallow space located below the ground floor of a house & surrounded by the foundation wall, which workers can enter to gain access to pipes, wires, & equipment.

cultured marble

Is a type of fabricated solid surface that resembles marble, is a mixture of resin & ground marble or limestone.

cupola

Decorative roof top or a rounded dome forming or adorning a roof or ceiling.

cupped

A specific type of warping when a board becomes "U" shaped across the face. Can be convex or concave. Caused by moisture change on one side of the floor.

cylindrical deadbolt

A cylindriacl latch used to secure a door closed, the latch being driven from the door into a receiver in the jamb or frame.

deadbolt

A bolt engaged by turning a knob or key, rather than by spring action.

diameter

A straight line segment passing through the center of a figure, especially of a circle or sphere, & terminating at the periphery.

dining counter

Area usually part of the kitchen where you can sit to eat meals.

direct drive screwdriver

A screwdriving tool that uses a continuous-drive clutch & stops once it achieves torque. Direct-drive clutch screwdrivers use air pressure to obtain torque & are mainly used on wood.

distressed wood look

Intentionally marred or faded to convey an antique or used wood look.

dome style awning

Look like the tops of umbrellas, have a rounded frame that supports a curved piece of acylic or nlyon.

double glazed

Two thicknesses of glass separated by an air space within an opening to improve insulation against heat transfer and / or sound transmission.

double hung

Of a window, having top & bottom sashes which are counterweighted or equipped with a spring on each side for easier raising & lowering.

drop pin closing system

An L shaped pin is secured usually into a hole in ground to lock gate.

dry rot

A fungus causing decay of wood in poorly ventilated conditions.

dry stacked

Built without mortar. Friction, gravity, & the interlocking of the individual stones hold the wall together.

drywall

A construction material consisting of thin panels of gypsum board.

dual pane window unit

Comprises two non-intersecting or, preferably, substantially parallel, spaced window panes, mounted in a window frame.

duct

A tube or passageway for air, cables, etc.

dummy handles

For doors where no latches are needed. Knobs or levers do not turn.

duplex / semi detached home

A house divided into two living units or residences, usually having separate entrances.

eased edge mirror

An angular cut made to edge of mirror, similar to the cut made on a beveled edge.

Easiroll

A unique one-piece roofing system. Cut ro requirements, eliminating the need for joins or dirt-collecting overlaps, with no wastage. Installation is easy - just roll out and screw in place.

egress windows

A window that is required in specific locations in a dwelling & is intended to provide an emergency means of exiting a dwelling.

electrical

Operating by, or producing electricity.

Electrician

A person qualified and licensed to carry out Electrical Work

etched glass

Type of glassware whose decorative design has been cut into the surface by the corrosive action of an acid.

exposed aggregate

A decorative finish for concrete work; achieved by removing the outer skin of mortar, generally before the concrete has fully hardened, & exposing the coarse aggregate.

exterior entry lockset

Lock is place on the outside facing side of door.

F4 finish

This is a standard finish quality in terms of smoothness and eveness of work

F5 finish

This is a finish that is of higher standard in terms of smoothness and eveness of workmanship

face frame

The frame fixed to the front of a cabinet carcase which obscures the edges of the carcase & provides the fixing point for doors & other external hardware.

fascia

A board covering the ends of rafters or other fittings or a long flat surface between mouldings on an architrave.

felt underlay

Gives you an extra thickness & protection to your new floor covering.

feng shui

The Chinese art or practice of positioning objects, especially graves, buildings, and furniture, based on a belief in patterns of yin and yang and the flow of chi that have positive and negative effects.

fibre cement board

A cellulose fibre reinforced cement board compressed to achieve high density for use in wet areas and external applications.

fibregalss

A material consisting of extremely fine glass fibers, used in making various products, such as yarns, fabrics, insulators, & structural objects or parts.

firebox

A chamber, such as the furnace of a steam locomotive, in which fuel is burned or a box containing a fire alarm.

flagstone

A flat square or rectangular stone slab, used for paving.

flashing

Sheet metal used to reinforce & weatherproof the joints & angles of a roof.

flat pan patio cover

Style of patio cover that has overall flat shape design.

flat panel door

A style of door consisting of a frame surrounding a flat panel so that the front of the panel is a little deeper than the frame.

flintstone

A very hard, fine-grained quartz that sparks when struck with steel.

float glass

Flat glass with a nearly true optical surface produced by floating a continuous sheet of molten glass on a bed of molten tin until the glass cools & hardens.

flocked

Wallcoverings made by a machine that shakes very fine cotton, silk, rayon or nylon fibers from a hopper over a pattern printed in varnish or slow drying paint to give the appearance of velvet or damask or create a three dimensional effect.

fluorescent light

A lamp that produces visible light by fluorescence, especially a glass tube whose inner wall is coated with a material that fluoresces when an electrical current causes a vapor within the tube to discharge electrons.

flush bolt

Bolts mounted in a door to lock a door in place. These bolts slide up into the jamb above the door, & down into the threshold or floor below door.

fly ash

Fine particulate ash sent up by the combustion of a solid fuel, such as coal, & discharged as an airborne emission or recovered as a byproduct for various commercial uses.

foam injected insulation

Foam is injected into exterior wall cavities. The material takes the shape of the cavity & it hardens & expands as it dries, redusing heat & sound.

foil

Constructed by laminating a thin sheet of aluminum foil onto a substrate of paper or scrim. Foils sometimes have a polyester sheet between the paper backing & the foil to prevent water in the adhesive from actually contacting the foil. These wallcoverings may have a pattern printed on the foil surface.

formwork

The structure of boards that make up a form for pouring concrete in construction.

fused glass

Is a term used to describe glass that has been fired (heat-processed) in a kiln at a range of high temperatures from 593º C (1100ºF) to 816º C (1500ºF).

fuses

A safety device consisting of a strip of wire that melts & breaks an electric circuit if the current exceeds a safe level.

gable dormer

The triangular part structure which contains a window.

gable roof

Roof with a triangle, with the ridge forming an angle at the top & each eave forming an angle at the bottom or another name is pitched roof.

gable vent

A louvered opening in the gable of a roof; used to exhaust air from an attic.

gable walkway awning

Style of entrance canopy.

galvanised

To coat (metal, esp. iron or steel) with zinc.

gas filled glass

Insulating glass with a gas, other than air, in the air space to decrease the unit's thermal conductivity (U-value) or to increase the unit's sound insulating value.

gazebo

A small roofed structure that is screened on all sides, used for outdoor entertaining and dining.

gear reduced screwdriver

The output speed can be reduced while the torque is increased.

grading

1. The gradual reduction of the land to a level surface; for example, erosion of land to base level by streams. 2. Segregating a product into a number of adjoining categories which often form a spectrum of quality, also known as classification.

gravel

A loose mixture of small stones & coarse sand.

gypsum

A widespread colorless, white, or yellowish mineral, CaSO4·2H2O, used in the manufacture of plaster of Paris, various plaster products, & fertilizers.

H3 treated

H3 treated timber is timber or posts that have been treated for outdoor use but not touching the ground

H4 treated

H4 treated timber is timber or posts that is treated for outdoor use and suitable for touching the ground

half round

A convex strip or molding of semicircular profile.

HDTV (high definition television)

Is a digital television broadcasting system with a significantly higher resolution than traditional formats.

heat tape

Flat tape containing resistance wiring that is traced along water & sewer lines to prevent freezing.

hepa air cleaner

It is a type of air filter that is used in air cleaning & purification, removes some of the smallest microns of allergens such as dust, smoke, pollen, animal dander, dust mite allergen etc.

herringbone

A zigzag pattern consisting of columns of short parallel lines, with all the lines in one column sloping one way and all the lines in the next column sloping the other way.

hydraulic

Relating to a liquid moving in a confined space under pressure.

hydronic baseboard heat

Is a method of heating the home using heated water.

implosion

Collapse or cause to collapse violently inwards.

in-ground well lights

Circlar spaped garden lighting that is in-sunk in to the ground.

inset door

A door that sits flush in the frame on front of the cabinet.

insulated concrete

Hollow foam blocks or panels that crews stack into the shape of the exterior walls of a building. They then pour reinforced concrete inside, creating a foam-concrete sandwich. The forms are left in place to provide insulation.

intercom

An electrical device allowing one-way or two-way communication.

interlocking

Engage with each other by overlapping or fitting together.

island

A thing that is isolated, detached, or surrounded.

jamb

A side post of a doorway.

joist

A length of timber or steel supporting part of the structure of a building.

knee high parapet walls

A low wall along the edge of a roof or balcony.

laminated glass

Is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered in the event of breaking.

Laminated glass

Two or more sheets of glass with an inner layer of transparent plastic to which the glass adheres if broken. Used for safety glazing and sound reduction.

lattice

An open framework made of strips of metal, wood, or similar material overlapped or overlaid in a regular, usually crisscross pattern.

lazy susan

A revolving tray for condiments or food.

leaded glass

Potassium silicate glass which has been impregnated with a small amount of lead oxide in its fabrication.

limestone

A hard sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate.

linear metres

A metre in which the deflection of the pointer is proportional to the quantity measured.

liner / blank stock

Used under wallpaper to absorb moisture & provide a smooth wall surface upon which to hang. It maximizes adhesion, provides a smooth surface & minimizes the possibility of mildew & staining.

linoleum

A material consisting of a canvas backing thickly coated with a preparation of linseed oil & powdered cork, used as a floor covering.

liquid (spray-on) texture

Liquid textures that provides weatherproofing & ease of maintence.

load-bearing

Type of construction in which walls, blank or punctuated with openings, support the floors, roofs, etc., as opposed to a structure based on the frame principle, as in timber-framed construction.

lockset

A set of hardware for shutting or locking a door.

low e (emittance)

A coating of microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a window or skylight glazing surface primarily to reduce the U-factor by suppressing radiative heat flow.

Mains Pressure Water Heater

This water heating system is where water is stored in a tank and the temperature is regulated at all times. The storage is connected to the water mains hence is usually of higher pressure as the volume of water that goes gout from the heater is almost the same as when it enters the heating system.

Forms part of a total rain guttering system. Installed on the vertical surface which spans across the top wall of a house.

Stucture framing is built with metal as opposed to wood.

mission (barrel) tile

A semi-cylindrical tile made by forming clay around a curved surface.

modem

A device for transmitting usually digital data over telephone wires by modulating the data into an audio signal to send it & demodulating an audio signal into data to receive it.

mortar

Any of various bonding materials used in masonry, surfacing, & plastering, especially a plastic mixture of cement or lime, sand, & water that hardens in place & is used to bind together bricks or stones.

mortar bed

A thick layer of mortar used to seat a structural member.

mosaic

A picture or pattern produced by arranging together small variously coloured pieces of stone, tile, or glass.

moulding

A moulded strip of wood, stone, or plaster as a decorative architectural feature.

mulch

A protective covering, usually of organic matter such as leaves, straw, or peat, placed around plants to prevent the evaporation of moisture, the freezing of roots, & the growth of weeds.

natural slate roofing

Dervived from fine-grained sand-free clay sediments, is strong & resistant to acid & frost.

non load-bearing

A wall capable only of supporting its own weight & (if it is an exterior wall) capable of resisting the force of the wind blowing against it; it cannot support an imposed load.

obsure

Any textured glass (frosted, etched, fluted, ground, etc.) used for privacy, light diffusion, or decorative effects.

Open or no riser

A staircase designed with only the horizontal surfaces of the treads fixed to the stair stringers. Vertical surfaces between treads are open.

ottoman

An upholstered sofa or divan without arms or a back. An upholstered low seat or cushioned footstool.

overlay door

In effect, the door fully lays over the door frame.

overlay glass

Glass formed of two or more fused layers of different colors; the top layer may be cut, permitting a lower layer to show through.

painted metal shake

Alternative to traditional wooden shake.

painted metal shingle

Creates a slate, wood, & tile look with the protection of metal.

painted metal tile

Lightweight alternative to clay or concrete tiles.

Palings

This is a fence made out of planks that is common in New Zealand

parquet

Arranged in a geometric pattern.

particle board

Material made from compressed wood chips & resin.

patio

An area, usually paved, adjoining a house and used as an area for outdoor lounging, dining, etc.

patio bolt

Secure deadlocking bolt, either top or bottom fitting for residential sliding & hinged door applications.

pavers

Unglazed porcelain or natural clay tile, formed by the dust-pressed method; similar to ceramic mosaic tile in composition & physical properties but thicker.

pendant light

Sometimes called a drop or suspender, is a lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling usually suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod.

perennial

Something that recurs or seems to recur on a yearly or continual basis.

pier

A wall between windows or other adjacent openings.

pilot light

A small jet of gas that is kept burning (in a hot water heater, boiler, or furnace) that ignites gas or oil burners when needed.

pitched roof

A two-sided sloped roof having a gable at both ends, also called gable roof.

plaster & lathe

Building process used mainly for interior walls.

plasterboard

A rigid board made of layers of fiberboard or paper bonded to a gypsum plaster core, used instead of plaster or wood panels in construction to form walls. Also called gypsum board, wallboard.

plasterboard stopping

Plasterboard stopping is the patching up of screws or nail holes or filling in of joints. This is often carried out on the plasterboard before painting

plastering sand

Produce plaster of predictable strength & durability, with a uniform appearance.

plate glass

A strong rolled & polished glass containing few impurities, used for mirrors & large windows.

plexiglass

Is commonly called acrylic glass, has a higher impact strength than glass & will not shatter.

plexiglass

A light transparent weather resistant thermoplastic, (trademark).

plush carpeting

An inexpensive carpet popularly used in apartments & other high-use residential locations.

plywood

Thin strong board consisting of two or more layers of wood glued together.

polycarbonate sheet

Excellent combination of toughness, transparency, heat & flame resistance & dimensional stability. Used when impact and flammability are a major consideration.

polyproplene

Any of various thermoplastic resins that are polymers of propylene, they are hard & tough, are used to make molded articles & fibers.

polystyrene

A synthetic resin which is a polymer of styrene.

porcelain

A white vitrified translucent ceramic.

poured concrete

Any concrete structure or slab that was poured & formed in a liquid state.

powder room

A women’s area for applying makeup etc.

quartz

A hard mineral consisting of silica, typically occurring as colourless or white hexagonal prisms.

raised panel door

A style of door consisting of a frame around a panel that has been routed so that the panel & door frame are flush with each other.
