Tips for Hiring Electricians
Electrical work done by electricians can be expensive especially when the work is improperly planned. Before you hire an electrician consider the following tips to help you get the most value for your money.
Prior to job request:
- Make a list of all electrical work that needs to be done, eg new wiring, rewiring, electrical installations etc.
- Group the types of electrical problems together
- Compare hourly rate of several electricians
- Consider skill & experience over a cheaper hourly rate, hiring quality first ensures you get the job done right the first time.
- Ask what work will be left after the job is finished. Electricians generally don’t repair holes, trenches or landscaping disturbed in the course of the job.
Prevention tips:
- Ensure that their license is current by checking documentation or ID cards issued by the New Zealand Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB). The Electrical Workers Registration Board, established by statute in 1992, is responsible for the ongoing competency of over 30,000 registered electrical and electronic workers. It also promotes electrical and electronic safety to all New Zealanders.
- If a consent is required for your electrical work, it should be under the licensed electrician’s name, not yours.
- Have your electrician wire in more power, even if you don't currently need it. If you plug in another TV or computer, most likely you won't consider how hard it's working your electrical main or if you even have enough power available.
Other ideas to consider:
- Check if your electrical wiring or switchboard requires upgrading. Many dangerous things can happen with old wiring.
- If you are available, ask your electrician questions before they leave. Seek their advice on things you can do to avoid short circuits, electrical fires or failures & other electrical problems.
- For your peace of mind, call an electrician out every two years for a regular electrical checkup. Electrical faults can be difficult to pick up especially when they are often hidden from view and do not appear until a problem surfaces.
